Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Cyclone Shakti has intensified over the Bay of Bengal, causing heavy rain and strong winds in coastal areas of West Bengal. Several districts, especially South 24 Parganas, have reported increased rainfall over the past few days as the cyclone moves closer to the coastline. The meteorological department confirmed that the low-pressure system has developed into Cyclone Shakti, which is currently advancing toward the coastal regions.
South 24 Parganas district administration has conducted multiple meetings with disaster management authorities to coordinate response efforts. The Sagar block administration has initiated miking campaigns along beaches, including Kapilmuni Ashram, advising tourists and pilgrims to return to safe locations after visiting the sea. Special attention is being given to the Sundarbans coastal areas where weak river embankments increase the risk of flooding during heavy rains.
The district has identified several schools and flood shelters in vulnerable zones as evacuation centers. These centers have been stocked with adequate drinking water and dry food supplies to support displaced residents during the cyclone. Civil Defence personnel are actively engaged in public awareness efforts, using loudspeakers to inform local communities about safety measures.
The Alipore Meteorological Office stated that Cyclone Shakti, named by Sri Lanka, is expected to make landfall near Gujarat’s Kutch region and Pakistan’s Karachi, with no direct landfall forecasted in West Bengal. However, coastal areas in the state may experience weather disturbances due to the cyclone’s proximity. Precautionary measures remain in place to mitigate potential impacts.
Kanaiya Kumar Rao, BDO of Sagar block, confirmed that all departments have been mobilized for disaster preparedness. He said, “We have identified safe shelters and stocked sufficient supplies. Civil Defence is actively warning people. We are fully prepared for any emergency arising from the cyclone.” The administration continues to monitor the situation closely and is ready to respond as needed.
